Advanced Polyimide Composite Used in
Outer Platform of Jet Engines

Aerospace ( Released March 1995)

AURUM Thermoplastic Polyimide Resin, Mitsui Chemicals' advanced engineering injection-moldable plastic, has been chosen by Ishikawajima-Harima Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. (IHI), a major jet engine manufacturer, for the outer platform of the V-2500 jet engine. The outer-platform supports the outer-vane which rectifies the air stream coming from the engine. The outer-platform must be corrosion resistant and have high impact strength since jet engines often "inhale" birds while cruising and ingest sand or gravel during take-off and landing. Historically, the outer-platform has been constructed from a forged aluminum alloy. Fuel efficiency improvement largely depends on reducing airplane weight. Jet engine mass can be decreased by replacing low-to-medium temperature and pressure parts, traditionally made from metal, with components made from high-performance plastics.

AURUM Thermoplastic Polyimide Resin, reinforced with carbon fiber, has one-half the weight of forged aluminum. AURUM can be injection-molded and costs less to produce.

During harsh environmental testing, including sand blasting and bird shooting, AURUM has shown superior strength. A recyclable material, AURUM is also kinder to the environment.

Produced by an international consortium of seven companies representing five countries, the V-2500 engines are used in commercial aircraft. The consortium includes the United States company Pratt and Whitney Division of the United Technologies, Rolls Royce from England, Fiat in Italy, the German company MTU and Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and IHI representing Japan.

Low Cost and High Productivity make AURUM® the
Choice of NSK for Turbo Charger Bearing Retainers

Automotive/Engine ( Released July 1994)

AURUM Thermoplastic Polyimide Resin, an ultra high-performance engineering plastic manufactured by Mitsui Chemicals, Inc., has been chosen by NSK, one of the world's largest bearing manufacturers, for the production of turbo charger bearing retainers.

NSK wanted to lower production costs and achieve higher productivity. AURUM was more successful than machined components made from compression molded stock shapes at meeting the customer's needs. A large Japanese auto manufacturer purchases an AURUM reinforced grade from NSK due to the ultra high-performance plastic's low cost, increased productivity, recyclability, lower noise, moldability and long life at high temperatures in oil. In 500 hours of turbo charger tests conducted by NSK,

AURUM bearing retainers performed well in an environment simulating actual under-the-hood conditions: low pressure, maximum velocity of 120,000 rpm, temperature between 200°-300°C, and steel mating material with oil lubrication.

AURUM injection-molded components such as bearings, seal rings, valve seats, gears, vanes, splines, and thrust washers can be found today in an extensive range of markets including automotive transmissions, business machinery, pumps and compressors, electric motors, semiconductor manufacturing equipment, appliances and instrumentation. AURUM is available commercially as a neat resin in over 15 specially compounded wear-resistant grades, and in machineable stock shapes for prototyping. AURUM wear-resistant grades are formulated with fluoropolymers and proprietary lubricants, graphite, carbon and glass fibers, aramid fibers, and other performance-enhancing materials.
